Saturday morning, Tim and I woke up and headed to breakfast. I Yelped a Natural Foods cafe that had great reviews and a large menu. Tim ordered egg whites and cheese with a side salad and toast. I ordered the Organic Oatmeal with apples, bananas, cinnamon, and honey. It was AMAZING!
We headed back to the apartment to change and pack a beach bag and then walked to the beach. It was a gorgeous day (one of the few) and the beach was packed. My sister Ali and her boyfriend Wes met us for some beach fun!
We ended up leaving after about 3 hours because it was HOT and we were definitely getting burnt. We walked down Collins Ave and shopped a little with my sister and Wes before they headed back up to Hallandale. Tim and I walked back to the apartment and relaxed before we started getting ready for dinner.
We decided on checking out the restaurant Yard Bird Southern Table & Bar. It had great reviews and was named one of the Top 50 restaurants by Bon Appetit Magazine, as well as, being a Semi-Finalist in Best New Restaurant 2012 and Best Chef 2012.
The atmosphere was awesome and it was packed. There was over an hour wait for the 2 of us. We stopped at the bar to have a drink before we were seated.Since it is a southern restaurant, the menu was made up mostly of bourbon and drinks made with bourbon. We are definitely not bourbon people but we love to try new things so we ordered the Blackberry Bourbon Lemonade and a Southern Peach.
We were finally seated and ordered another round of drinks. I love bourbon! Yard Bird is all about large dishes and sharing and our waitress recommended sharing either a bunch of small plates or a few large plates. Next time we will make sure to have a large group of people so we can order a bunch of apps and entrees. Tim and I ordered the Macaroni and Cheese (Torchio pasta, 5 artisanal cheeses, crispy herb crust) to start and then each ordered our own entrees. If you want to better understand why they suggest sharing, take a look at the menu and you’ll see that they have small plates, large plates, and salads. There were so many great picks on the menu but we can only eat so much between the 2 of us.
For dinner, I ordered the Chicken Under a Brick (Carolina Poulet Rouge, fresh rosemary, local lemon, Brussels sprouts, fresh tomatoes & okra) and Tim ordered the Sweet Tea-Brined Southern Ribs (Tender slow-cooked ribs smothered in housemade BBQ, pickled chilies). We licked our plates clean! For the first time, we didn’t have any leftovers!
And of course, we always get dessert! I ordered the Chocolate Bacon Whoopie Pie n’ Milk
(chocolate cookie and puddin’) and it was interesting. There was a lot of bacon so I took some off but regardless, it was delicious. It was served with a side of milk for either drinking or dipping!
After dinner we walked home and relaxed before heading to bed.
Sunday morning was our last day in Florida and we woke up to rain! We relaxed for a little bit and watched TV and headed out to get brunch before the shuttle picked us up to bring us to the airport. We got to the airport early so that we could watch the Eagles/Ravens game but we forgot we were nowhere near Baltimore or Philly and why would they have that game on? We watched it on Game Cast on Tim’s laptop but it was not the same as actually seeing the game. After the Eagles won (close call!) we grabbed some lunch and then started to board. Bye Bye Florida!
